Listening to Goth music since early 80’s and never much realized.

I've been seeing a lot of overlap of works said to be Goth I often knew as other. Call it whatcha want depending where you stand, whatever. A great snot load of stuff I've always been into I'm discovering is considered Goth by the Goth community. Or Goth adjacent or of Goth in some way. I've always seen myself as somewhat Goth. More I explore the music from a Goth angle and, again, been listing to lots of it for decades now, I belong. Quiet cool. Looking for Goth compilations. Some I've already got. Life Less Lived – great tittle there!

I will never forgive gooner goth fetishists from turning the public perception of goths from one of the coolest music genres of the 80s and a beautiful artistic movement to a pornhub search category

I know I'm not the first person to share this sentiment and I know I will certainly be far from the last. What is funny is a lot of the goth sexualization and objectification comes from predominantly right wing circles, despite the Goth movement having left wing ties due to it being an offshoot of punk culture and a post punk subculture.

Not to mention the growing watered down idea of what a goth is. Dudes refer to people who, the closest thing related to goth they listened to, is something like Deftones or Lil peep. Not to diss on them but to say they are goth is factually incorrect.

Matter of fact, they'll probably call ANYONE who wears eyeliner and wears black goth. I've seen emos and metalheads get labeled as goth it's insane. It's clear that these people who want a "Dommy mommy goth" (I felt physical repulsion typing out that string of words) are not interested in the subculture or music whatsoever, and quite frequently, condemn it. If presented with a trad goth, steampunk goth, or something like that, will most likely be the first ones to point and laugh, or say some shit like "do a wrist reveal."

I mean there's nothing wrong with having preferences, but it becomes kind of fucking weird when you make it a personality trait.

I think a main factor of their fetishization or "justification" in their fetishization is the idea that all goths are sexually promiscuous and "freaky" who will take charge in an intimate setting and has a list of fetishes that matches the length of Santa's naughty list. I think it becomes really telling how goth porn subreddits have more members than actual goth subreddits

This little rant is getting a little lengthy, I only intended to write a few sentences and got really sidetracked, but yea. I wasn't really sure where to post this and figured it would be fitting to post this here. I frequent this sub often, although I don't think I ever posted here. I guess just lemme know what you guys think

As a Middle Eastern goth i never felt excluded from the goth community and never felt ”different”

** Please note that i'm merely speaking about my own personal experience and not trying to diminish other people's experience within the community *\*

As someone with Iranian heritage who has been in the scene for a long time, i've never felt unwelcomed at all. I never got racist or ignorant comments thrown at me. Not in real ife, nor online. I honestly never felt like my ethnicity ever mattered. It didn't cross my mind once. And i also never felt like making my ethnicity a part of my goth identity. I was in the goth scene because i loved the music and loved the fashion and lifestyle that came with it. I have also found that out of all the alt scenes, goths were the kindest and chillest people.

I don't know if my appearance played a part in this, as i'm someone who is already naturally quite pale and have natural dark hair. For instance, when i stopped dressing goth, some people still thought that i was a goth.

I'm honestly shocked and also saddened hearing of poc goths who don't feel confident enough in joining the community. And what makes me even more sad and especially angry is when poc goths face scrutiny from other pocs and how they're being accused of acting ''white'', these kinds of ignorant remarks seems to be specifically thrown at black goths and it makes me so sad.

Goth is universal and for everyone. From the dark and ancient mysticism, folklore and sounds coming from the Middle East, to the spooky and eerie tales and aesthetics hailing from New Orleans. Goth has found inspiration from many corners of the world.

Just bought tickets to see Sisters of Mercy, I have never been to any kind of concerts before, what can I expect?

Hello friends! I saw that SoM is having a concert near me in October, and bought the “Floor – General Admission Standing” tickets on a whim. I’ve seen this sub making fun of SoM’s concerts, but I don’t mind a “crappy” performance. It’ll be nice to still see them before they retire.

I have never experienced the music scene. I’m in my mid 20s, and this is going to be my first concert. I don’t have friends to go with me or give me guidance, so I wanted to turn to this sub for help!

  1. The location is at San Francisco The Masonic, what can I expect? Is it huge and easy to find?

  2. What does “Floor – General Admission Standing” tickets entail outside of its name?

  3. How can I better prepare myself? I’m probably going to be taking the Bay Area Transportation System so I don’t have to worry about parking

  4. Do people dress up at SoM concerts?

  5. Is going alone as a 25 year old female poc safe?

Many many thanks in advance!!

What song can you never get sick of?

What’s a song that you could listen to over and over again and never get tired of it? Mine would be “This Corrosion” by TSOM
